Dance styles I have tried but not persuing at the moment
Some people pick up movement and choreography quickly and some people need to lots of repetition. I guess I fall into the latter camp. I sing and play a little guitar and piano, so musicality, rhythm and tempo come naturally for me.
But being a lead and dancing with a partner adds an entirely different way to experience music. As a neophyte on the amateur dance circuit, I was initially overwhelmed by the shear number of dance styles. Some styles I’ve tried, but failed to master to any level of decency include:
- Foxtrot
- Cha-Cha
- Salsa
- Waltz
- Viennese Waltz
- Nightclub Two Step
- Two Step
- Triple Two Step
- Blues Dancing
About me and dancing
It’s been a year and a half since, my girlfriend got me to try ballroom dancing. My first class was a 2 hour Hustle workshop taught by Richard Fowler through Austin Ballroom Dancers (ABD). Richard is a fabulous ballroom dance instructor. If you live in Austin and are interested in learning to dance, I highly recommend that you go visit Richard’s site, Kungfu Ballroom.
I tried quite a few dance styles that I am not persuing at the moment.
After a lot of failed attempts to gain proficiency as a lead, I developed my method to choose which dance styles to learn.
Right now, the Swing family of dancing works for me. Swing for me includes but is not limited to:
- East Coast Swing
- West Coast Swing
- Texas Whip
- Lindy Hop
- Charleston
- Hustle
My method for choosing which dance styles to learn
I figured out the only way for me to “get it” would be learn a dance(s) that fit my lifestyle (favorite venues, music temperment, social circles, events I regularly attend, etc).
My current method for choosing dance styles includes the following tenets:
- The dance style has to be visually appealing to me (i.e. look cool).
- Must be able to dance with a variety of musical styles.
- Musical styles must be prevalent in Austin’s live music venues.
- Dance style has a lot of related dance styles and/or variations.
- Related styles are similar enough to facilitate synergistic learning.
- Related styles allow for a lot of cross pollenation of dance moves.
McDonald’s is in collusion with the U.S. dairy lobby!!!

I rarely go to McDonald’s, but I was pressed for time today. So, I ordered 2 cheese burgers and a medium fry. I couldn’t help but notice each cheese burger had only one pickle. Which got me thinking that there’s probably a specific way these things are constructed. It turns out, it’s really-really difficult if not impossible to order a cheeseburger without cheese. Check it out…
Where’s a laid back place to get good Cajun seafood in Austin?
The Place Quality Seafood
Menu
You know they probably got it right when you see things like:
- Fried Oyster Po-Boys
- Crawfish Etouffee
- Seafood Gumbo
- Fried Okra
- Spicy Peel and Eat Shrimp
Specials
They’re doing a King Crab special on Mondays right now, so it’s pretty busy. Expect to wait a little for your food (15-20 minutes after ordering). But it’s worth it.
Fun
Mondays a New Orleans Jazz band performs. Some of the better Lindy Hop dancers in Austin have made this a regular social gig. I say social gig, because there’s not really much room to dance. It’s more about eating and talking. Occasionally a couple gets up and dances.
